Dell EqualLogic PS Series iSCSI SAN Arrays – Storage Area Network

This is not the first time I deal with SAN device but I never use it with Ubuntu Linux before. Anyway, there is first time for everything.

After 15 minutes playing around with Open-iSCSI (it can be done in just a few seconds in Windows by using GUI based iSCSI Initiator), here is the howto (and at the same time as a note for myself)

1) Install Open-iSCSI Initiator

sudo apt-get install open-iscsi

2) If you want your computer manually connect to the SAN volume, proceed with step 3. But if you want your computer automatically connect to the volume, edit the iscsid configurtation file

sudo nano /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf

And change the following parameters

  • isns.address = SAN-IP-ADDRESS-HERE
  • isns.port = 3260

3) If the restriction is based on IP (without password) procees with step 4. But if password is required, edit the iscsid configurtation file

sudo nano /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf

And change/set the following parameters

  • node.session.auth.username = USER
  • node.session.auth.password = PASSWORD
  • discovery.sendtargets.auth.username = USER
  • discovery.sendtargets.auth.password = PASSWORD

4) Restart the open-iscsi service

sudo /etc/init.d/open-iscsi restart

5) Run open-iscsi administration utility with root privilege to discover available volume

sudo iscsiadm -m discovery -t sendtargets -p

where is the IP of your SAN. If your configuration is working, you will get something similar to this :-,1 iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-f260b4603-e8b0000001249f55-vss-control,1 iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-6980b4603-a990000001f49f56-csmvol3,1 iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-58c0b4603-1730000001c49f56-csmvol2,1 iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-4280b4603-a410000001949f56-csmvol1

6) In this case, I want to connect to volume 1 (iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-4280b4603-a410000001949f56-csmvol1), so here is what I should do

sudo iscsiadm --mode node --targetname iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-4280b4603-a410000001949f56-csmvol1 --portal --login

And if you are successfully connected, you’ll get the following message

Logging in to [iface: default, target: iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-4280b4603-a410000001949f56-csmvol1, portal:,3260]
Login to [iface: default, target: iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-4280b4603-a410000001949f56-csmvol1, portal:,3260]: successful

7) Now, verify the device name that has been connected to your machine

tail -f /var/log/messages

And in my case, this is my output

Apr 28 09:42:48 xps kernel: [ 2514.014658] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access EQLOGIC 100E-00 4.0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

The connected volume appear to be as SDB in my machine

8 ) If the volume already contain partition and already formated, you can straight away mount them, but if they dont have partition and filesystem yet, you can either use fdisk or gparted to create the partition and format them 😉

Nilai Hartanah Dijangka Susut 20 Peratus

Ketua Pengarahnya, Datuk Abdullah Thalith Md. Thani berkata, berdasarkan petunjuk itu, pihaknya turut menjangkakan harga hartanah dan nilai sewaan turut terjejas pada tahun ini.

Stephen Hawking Hospitalized, Reported Very Ill

Stephen Hawking, the British mathematician and physicist famed for his work on black holes, was rushed to a hospital Monday and was seriously ill, Cambridge University said. Hawking has been fighting a chest infection for several weeks and was being treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, the university city northeast of London, the university said.

“Professor Hawking is very ill,” said Gregory Hayman, the university’s head of communications. “He is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks.”

Later in the afternoon, Hayman said Hawking was “now comfortable but will be kept in hospital overnight.”

illness had caused Hawking to cancel an appearance at Arizona State University on April 6.

Hawking, 67, gained renown for his work on black holes, and has remained active despite being diagnosed at 21 with ALS, (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), an incurable degenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

For some years, Hawking has been almost entirely paralyzed, and he communicates through an electronic voice synthesizer activated by his fingers.

Hawking was involved in the search for the great goal of physics — a “unified theory” — which would resolve contradictions between Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which describes the laws of gravity that govern the motion of large objects like planets, and the Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with the world of subatomic particles.

“A complete, consistent unified theory is only the first step: our goal is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our own existence,” he wrote in his best-selling book, “A Brief History of Time,” published in 1988.

In a more accessible sequel “The Universe in a Nutshell,” published in 2001, Hawking ventured into concepts like supergravity, naked singularities and the possibility of a universe with 11 dimensions.

He announced last year that he would step down from his post as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a title once held by the great 18th-century physicist Isaac Newton. However, the university said Hawking intended to continue working as Emeritus Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

“Professor Hawking is a remarkable colleague. We all hope he will be amongst us again soon,” said Peter Haynes, head of the university’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

Brian Dickie, director of research at the Motor Neurone Disease Association, said only 5 percent of people diagnosed with ALS survive for 10 years or longer.
