Facebook : Service Unavailable – DNS failure

August 20th, 2009

dig seems to be OK

I’m still waiting for the news of why this thing happened..

[update]

DAMMIT!!
I used “dig facebook.com” and not “dig www.facebook.com”.. ARGH!!!! Anyone has dig result for www.facebook.com? I pretty much believe that it has something to do with Akmai’s distributed servers

[update]

hi all, i believe that, this issues come some the distributed akmai server. If you are on Linux/Unix/Mac, this is what you can do:-

sudo -i
echo "69.63.191.219 www.facebook.com" >> /etc/hosts

then start browsing to facebook :)

Why is this happening is there a solution to it which i can try to fix it from my end.

  2. September 6th, 2009 at 20:13 | #2

MAYBE it is because of akmai distributed server… but i’m not sure.. 1 way you could do is to access it via IP.. use dig command and access the returning IP in ur browser

    dig www.facebook.com

I found that if you are using the Adblock extension, and subscribe to an ad list (basically a list of known ads online), it blocks a special site (fbcdn.net) that Facebook uses to login.

Go to Facebook.com (the page you are having trouble logging in), click on the Adblock Stop Sign on top of Firefox, and you will see in red a url that includes fbcdn.net. Right click on that, and add an exception for the entire fbcdn.net domain. Reload the page. This should fix the problem.

none of that worked for me, but for the Bluecoat person, try logging in to teh mobile site, you cant chat and do as much, but its better than nothing. or the app on ur ipod or iphone.

also just try logging in to m.facebook.com and then once ur logged in go to the bottom of the page and click full site, itlll redirect you, log in again, and it works!! :D

from my point of view, it is due to distributed server that facebook is using now. If i’m now mistaken, they use the sevice that provided by Akmai. By browsing to facebook.com, your request might be resolved to several server (distributed) and somehow causing this problem.

Just from my point of view :)
